Additional Purchase Awards
$3,500 Grand Canyon Association Purchase Award:
The Grand Canyon is the most frequented natural wonder in the entire world, with more than four million visitors a year. It is also a major palette of artistic inspiration. The Grand Canyon Association, a non-profit organization which supports education and science at Grand Canyon National Park, is proud to sponsor a $3,500 purchase award that celebrates the unique beauty of this magnificent place. Our long-term partner in underwriting such awards and acquisitions is the Jack Dudley Memorial Fund, established in 1997 to honor the late Jack Dudley. In addition to the cash award, the selected work will join our permanent art collection on display at Grand Canyon National Park. The judges for this award would like to encourage fresh innovative views of the canyon’s timeless beauty. Subject matter, while as limitless as the grandeur of the canyon, might include unique perspectives of terrain, weather, historic structures, events, native plants, river running, and hiking, to name just a few vantages which could be favorably considered as a winning composition. For more information about the Grand Canyon Association and the Jack Dudley Memorial Fund please visit our websites at: www.grandcanyon.org and www.jackdudley.org .
$3,500 Allegheny Portage Railroad / Johnstown Flood National Memorial Purchase Award:
The Allegheny Portage Railroad and the Johnstown Flood National Memorial are jointly operated by the National Park Service. This $3,500 Purchase Award is funded through the Friends of the Johnstown Flood Memorial. One Purchase Award winner will be chosen for a painting which represents either the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, or the Johnstown Flood National Memorial. The two Pennsylvania sites are within approximately 15 miles of each other.
The Johnstown Flood Memorial comprises nearly 165 acres in Western Pennsylvania. The park’s mission is to tell the story of the events leading up to the Great Johnstown Flood of 1889. The addition of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club significantly increases the site options for painters to depict this site. The Allegheny Portage Railroad has many interesting areas for painters to depict. Visit the Lemon House, an historic tavern built to accommodate travelers. Discover the Engine House, a replica of the many buildings that made up the Portage Railroad. Drive out to the Staple Bend Tunnel and explore the nine hundred foot tunnel.
The judges for this award encourage artists to explore creative views of the many acres within these two parks. For more information about the two parks, please visit www.nps.gov
